Why Students Fail the NSW Selective Test Despite Practising

The Hidden Problem With "More Practice"

Every year, thousands of Year 6 students sit the NSW Selective School Placement Test. Many have completed hundreds of practice papers. Yet the majority don't achieve the score they need.

Why?

Because marks are lost to behaviour, not knowledge.

What the Data Shows

After analysing thousands of exam sessions on Select Academy, we found three patterns that account for most lost marks:

1. Panic Drops After Question 20-25

Students start strong, then hit a cluster of hard questions. Their accuracy drops by 30-40% and never recovers. This isn't a knowledge gap — it's a psychological response.

2. Overthinking Correct Answers

Students who change their answers more than 20% of the time score 15% lower on average. They had the right answer, second-guessed themselves, and changed to a wrong one.

3. Time Mismanagement

Students who spend 60%+ of their time on the first half of the exam rush through the second half. Their accuracy in the final 10 questions drops by 50%.

What Parents Can Do

  • 1. Track behaviour, not just scores. A score of 70% tells you nothing about why 30% was lost.
  • 2. Identify panic triggers. Does your child panic after consecutive wrong answers? After a hard question? When time runs low?
  • 3. Practice under realistic conditions. Timed exams with no second chances build the pressure tolerance needed for exam day.
  • How Select Academy Helps

Select Academy's Behaviour Analytics tracks 7 dimensions of exam performance — including panic detection, time management, and confidence stability. After every exam, students and parents get a detailed report showing exactly where and why marks were lost.
